In 2015, I had just coached my last soccer game with the #1 team in the nation. For a single moment, I stood at the top. Then without warning, I was pulled back to reality when I was told that they wouldn’t be renewing my contract as the head coach of the soccer team.
I was left with a choice, I could allow this failure to be the defining moment in my life story or I could take on a different path. Parents started a petition, players threatened to quit, and the administration said that I could come back as an assistant to the new head coach.
Allow me to give some context, previous to ever becoming a soccer coach or a high school teacher I was making 2x the money. A pension, company car while working at a Fortune 500 company. I left it all to pursue the challenge I had received from my deceased father. A challenge that had become my "why", to impact as many lives as I could before I die.
As I stood in the office of the athletic coordinator with my resignation papers in hand, I asked myself, “What is the thing that I do better than anyone else”. I realized that my entire life was built around telling stories, earning a story, impacting stories, & helping other people tell better stories.
I started to plan my escape from education. I published a book, began speaking on stages (even at a Fortune 500 company), earned my EMBA, partnered with reputable training organizations to begin training, reading, growing, failing, building, and creating.
Everyone in the world has a story.
Everyone in the world thinks in story form.
People are more likely to succeed if they can keep their audience's attention longer than their competition.
